I am directed by the Earl of Kimberley to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated the 20th April, and I am to inform you in reply that his Lordship will note your application for the Chieftaincy at Hoihow (Hoi-how), but that according to the number of candidates on his list he fears that he cannot hold out to you much hope of compliance with your request.
