(Specially Written for the "Hongkong Singelegraph.
Among the various grades of sea-faring man on the China coast, none is more typical than the third engineer. He sails without ticket which he failed to sacurs, very probable not through lack of ability or talent in the exercise of his profession but more likely through that inartooss which long residence in the East seems to engender, It was just soch a man that the writer happened to knock up against the other day and a hearty hand grip followed the meeting, for we had made friends apme years: befare on the occasion of a notorious plrating raid to Chloese waters and had been under fire together on the vessel on which he was engaged. It is a characteristic, too, of the third en- gineer that be always displays an intense de sire to leave the sea and get a shore job. ON DECK AND BELOW.
It is a strange fact that generally the relations between the deck officers and engineers are anything but sweet-While one would-natural- ly suppose that the utmost harmony would prevail amongst the small knot of men who make up the European contingent on the China coaster, the very opposite is unfortunate- ly to be observed. There are instances, of course, of great (personal friendship existing between deck and engine room, but there are faw and far bolweed. The general treed of feeling is one of voiled nutagonism, and the things one hears attored in the engineers' mess would make the ears of the deck officers tingle were it not for the fact that the latter are just as prone to unkind criticisms of the men from the nether regions.
It can ba taken for granted that in the midst of these bickerings and recriminations the voice of the third enginner makes itself heard with no uncertain sound. He told me of one experience which came from him with great gusto reminiscent of pleasant remem brances. Oon of the mates-the junior-was sent to the engine room daring his watch to aak for more speed to the ship, but he declined to take any antics of the order unless by write ten instructions transmitted through the chief engineer; and, what, was more, he gained his poist and was quite upheld by the latter in his
