HALLEY'S COME?.

PROPOSAL TO BOTTLE THE AIR ÓN MAY 18,

Professor H. H. Turner, who holds the Savi Ilan Professorship of Astronomy at Oxford held by Halley in 1704, lectured to a crowded audi once at the Royal Institution in Albemarle- street on Hallby'r' compt.' In the course of a fascinating address Professor Turner made the very striking suggestion'!-- --

"On May 18 we shall be in the tall of the cimet. If you like to boille some of the air and hand it down to your grandchildren, they will have in their possession some of Halley's comat of 1910."

"I think," added he,*"that" this institution ought to bottle large quantities of air on that night and flod out what is really in the comet's fall."

Professor Tomar dismissed any fear that may still exist of the consequences of passing through the comet's tall by stating that only one, hàndred-thaurandth part of the air on May 18 will be the comal's tall,

From the investigations of Professor & Fowler, of the Royal College of Science, South Kensington, it would stam, he said, that the. contents of the tall are similar to some substance which is present in a tabe which has contained hydrogen when the hydrogen in extracted. What that substance is Professor Fowler has not yet been able to determine, but it has the sama spectrum as the comet's tall and therefore' it la reasonably certain that this extremely attenuated and unknown substance found in the hydrogen tube in prosent in the tall, and some of it will be added to the air we breathe on the night of May 18,TM

Daxling first with the path of the comet' Professor Turner explained with great clearness the fact that a comet moves slowly when at its greatest distance from the sun, and very much faster when nearing and passing round the sun. Some of the peculiarities of the talls of comets were described by Prafenor Tamer with the ald of graphic drawings and lantern sildes, Sometimes, he observed comets lose their tails That is not always because the tall disappeares but sometimes because it is behind the comet ́and for the time, therefore, invisible.

The dissipation of the tails of comate is now accepted as a fact and leads to the conclusion that comets gradually grow smaller until they

·probably break up into smalí meteors.
