NOTES BY THE WAY,

THE OUTLOOK.

It is encouraging to learn from the lips of no meaner authority than the Chairman of the Hongkong and Shanghal Bank that the de- pressed trade of the last five years is at last be ginning to show distinct signs of a revival The advent of the long-expected ture of the tide of which we have heard so much of late has proved iisalt such an alusive customer and bas preferred to remain in the background for such a long period, with little or no sigas of an appeardace, that it has come to be regarded in the nature of an El Dorado beyond attainment. There are some people who would argue that optimism is all very well in its way, but I am firmly convinced that the Chairman of the Hongkong Bank along with a goodly number of prominent business-man who take a hopeful view of the future are not factosted in their sanguine reflections solely by optimistic motives but have their hopes based on real solid founda- tions, which are daily becoming more and more apparent, Besides, even if their cheerful forecasts are not justified by facts, one must remember that if optimism is useless and futile, passimiem is worse,

stantial economics, which be effected in the cost of repairs and renewals, but although we saved there and on a low siber smaller items 'we suffered from the increased price of cos), while the cost of stevedorage at Manila is also up by about, Pa," 5,000.00, but that' is natural awing to more cargo having been handlad at that end. The figure at which the steamors ataud in the books is Dat a high one, but some allowance must be made ia fulare for depreciation, and next year, if we cannot da so out of profits, we must fall back on the insurance account, which now has over $72,000.00 at its credit. We are running a good big line ourselves, but" by doing so wa get the balance done by underwriters at lower terms than they would accept if we reduced the value of the steamers, The accounts require no comment or explanation, all the items Baing much the same ar before. As to the future, I said last year we must sat be disheartened, because we were pass. ing through a cycle of bad times, and it looks now as if there were better times ahead for all of us. "Trade generally has much improved, and the big crops all over the world must have a good affect on shipping. Last year the total imports into the United Kingdom amounted to £624,740,517 or £31,787,030 better than 1908 while exports were 1,275,610 better at a total of £378,379,444 and this is a genuine improvement a prices of commodities ware. low for the most part of the year. December showed a great advance, which is a good augury for what we should do this year. As for our particular branch of trade, shipping, It bas
