was not so fortunate as other owners in his draw for the subscription griffins, Tomabawk's running in the Navy Cup yesterday must have delighted his owner at the same time us a great many would save been pleased to have seen his placing reversed from third to fist position.
In point of pumbers the attendance did not suffer any diminution to-day from that of the two previous days. In fact, the opposite bas been the case. Being Ladies' Day, the fair sex was much more to evidence and their pretty gown attracted the attention of many who were not too engrossed in their, CO. deavour to spot", the winners and were accordingly influenced by the environment. Rarely before has the Grand Stund held such aa asembly of ladies as it did to-day after the race for the Ladies' Purse was run, of which moje kode. The paddock was uncomfortably crowded, and the impression is beginning to get a hold in many winds that the European and sporting community is scadily outgrowing the enclosure within the gates on racedays. This was goticeable the afternoon- some. what pleasing fact, however, which testifies to the popularity of the annual race meeting. On the green the Chinese, too, were reinforced la numbers and a more orderly and easily pleared crowd is difficult to find anywhere in the world,
It is difficult to conclude the year's chronicle of horse racing on the leland without a, due meed of praise to the Stewards and owners for the excellent sport provided to the public af such little cost to the community. There is no question that the sporting fraternity is largely indebted to the Stewards of the Jockey Club for the studied arrangements which gave such complots satisfaction throughout. Upos Mr. T. F. Hough, the clerk of the course, bas fallen the brunt of the work. But he has emerged from the ordeal with conspicuous pccess. Sir Henry May and Mr, H. J. Gedge as starters have no equal and the way in which the fieldsollen farge ones were got away in equal terms speaks much for their sense of fairplay and correct judgment. Capt. F. W. Lyons' position in charge of the scales was Do sinecure, and Sir,d'aul Chater's decision was never, in any singla iqstance," questioned. To our visitors and especially those who have entered such fine ponies as those represented. by the "Tien" stable, Hongkong Jatgely Ibdebted for the present season's success. The same must be said at the riders who have shown what jockeyship can do in deciding the issue of a race. Among the latter mention must be made of Mesirs. Burkila's, Vida's, and Nallar's riding, without whom the chances would have proved uneven in many a closely contested evare this season.
The police have again rendered excellent service. So also have the officials of the Tran- way Company, against whom not one word of complaint has been heard. The Buffs régi mental band played an extended programme of musical selections which went a long way to enliven the three days' proceedings.
*Flyaway Sipkes was the first race to be rass sfer the luncheon hour for which five ponies elurted, with silverton as the most fancied, Mr. Jubostons, by clever jockeyship, justified pour favour and was an excellent face in fue style, beating Jubilee Rose's previous record of 1.494js bý 75th second.
