Very similar weather conditions prevailed to-day-the second day of, the Hongkong) Jockey Club's annual race meeting-as on the opestag day yesterday. The ladies of the Colony again graced the, occasion with their presence in increasingly Jarge numbara and their pretty costumes and and daintily trimmed hats lent colour and charm to the tout ensemble.. His Excellency Sir Frederick Lugard, who never fails to idea- tify himself with the members of the community whether in business or pleasure, was an in- terested spectator from an early hour of the day and stayed to the very end of the races,
His Excellency was accompanied by Capt. Simion, private secretary, and on arrival was welcomed by the Stewards of the Jockey Club while the Band in attendance played the open ing bars of "God Save the King,"
The pari-mutuel tracted the usual patrons and those who had been lovesting in anticipation of surprises were fortified by the result of the first race, although none were hoaxed as they were yesterday when, after accepting the possibilitles of a loss backers of the first and second placed ponies got back their $5 bilis without so much as a cent of gain in the race for the Hongkong Club Cup. The popularity of the cash sweeps li demonstrated by the higher prizes in the later races of the day. The fortunate drawer of the. winning ticket No. 100 in the Derly came in for $3,34250, a sum which is not to be despised While notice has been made of every form
of attraction contributing to the pleasure of the
day mention must not be omitted of the excellent music provided by the Band of the Buffs which played various selections to the delight of the public. The arduous duties of the police were carried out in the same admirable manner the community is now accustomed to expect from them. The Hongkong Electric Traction Co., was responsible for ibè conveyance of the enormous number of passengers which reflects the highest credit on Traffic Superintendent Course. We were informed by an official that the trams carried the record traffic to-day.
