AMERICAN/TRADE WITH THE
ORIENT.
VIEWS OF MR }, J. BILL,
Mr. Hill concludes his article with the follow" ing words:-
Today the United States is in the Orient where it is in-all the other markets of the earth -face to face with a world-wide competition, with as interest growing but slowly or actu. ally declining, with a high cost of production and with the prospect that its costomers are only wailing the time, near at band, when they can become its compelitors. The 'situation is more momentous for this than for any other country, because our control of the. Pacific touches our future and valles our fortuces with those of the other nations that live upon its shores, The outlook is not hopeless, but it is not encouraging. The country needs to rid itself of the illusion that its oriental trade is to be one of the big elements in its future prosperity-a conception still lingering grotesquely in many minds, along with the idea that we are powerful competiton of other nations in the world's markets for manufactured goods and settle down to saving such of it as can be saved. There are still possibilities if all the transportation forces, all the people, the Federal Government, and the law should unite to protect, to encourage this traffic, and to liberats it from the bondage against which it has almost ceased to struggle.
