Peking, 25th January, The Waiwupu has notified the Mi- mistry of Finance to the effect that according to communications received from the British Minister, Sir John Jordan, the exportation of opium to Chinn from India for last year was 56,800 chests, being 5,600 chests less than the quantity for the year before last.

REVISION OF THE CUSTOMS TARIFF OF JAPAN, A committes of foreign residents in Japan formed under the auspices of the Yokohama Foreign Board of Trade for the purpose of watching occidental trade interests in connec- tion with the Custom Tariff of Japan upon the expiry of the present Treaties in August, 1911, requested the views had suggestion of the Chamber regarding any change in the Tariff.

Considerable correspondence has passed - be- tween the Chamber, the Government and Sir John Jardan with inference to the attempt on the part of the Canton Government to impose regulations on the sale of opium, which are considered to be an infringement of existing
treaties.
The earlier stages of this subject are con tained in last year's report.
Several telegrams haya passed' between the Chamber and H.B.M.'s Minister at Peking and every possible step has been taken towards the protection of the interests of the British opium merchants, but the matter is not yat satisfac torily settled.
