The following correspondence relative, to converting the triangular piece of Crown land opposite the south face of the old Harbour Office into an opön air fruit market, was con- sidered at the Sanitary Board manting, this 'afternoon 1-'
Hos. D. P. W.,-I propose to recommend to Government that the triangular piece of Crown land opposite the south face of the old Harbour Office beconverted into an open air fruit market. To do thin it will be necessary to remove the present engine house which appears to be out of repair; and also to divide up the ground and tall out the stalls proposed. When this ban been done the stalls should be put up to tender. At present the hawker there pays 54 a year end bas hugo stalls which should pay Sin mootb... If necessary the whole area might later on be roofed in..

H.S. D., am in accord with you that this place should be straightened up and the hawker crowd brought into line and various attempts bave been made in past times to do so. I trust you will be more fortunate in your efforts.
Mr. Chatham was against letting out this place to any particular individual and we have had repeated offers,"
I think the roller hat might remain, It is used, of course, but the roller is kept as busy as possible and is not always put to bed at night! The temporary Westero market site for it is on the tram line and never convenient; it would cast 5too to use up.. A better site is at the cad of that one in Connaught Road, but a new but would cost $150. jan
I think on the whole leave it where it is and arrange the plot like this.

Mr. G. B. Dodwell, head of the firm off Messrs. Dodwell and Co., Ltd., and Chairman of the biggest plantation rubber company in the world-the Malacca Rubber Plantations is leaving Ceylon where he has made a stay of A few weeks, for Bombay to-morrow, reports the Times of Crylon of the 17th ult. Mr. Dodwell has been up-country and secu a good deal of the island during his brief visit, this time. He is of opinion that plantation rubber has a great future before it, in which Ceylon will certainly participate, judging by the planta- tions be has seen in this island,
Speaking of the price of rubber Mr. Dodwell said he did not expect a. big drop for some time yet, At present the price was too high for good busives, though no doubt it was pleasing to producers. No one expected the price ever to go up to nine shillings, and cer tainly not the manufacturer.
