THE GOVERNOR'S ADDRESS.
In continuation of our report of yesterday wa give the addresses that ware delivered at the distribution of prizes at 56 Joseph's College that evening." "
After the Director's report had been read,. The Rt. Rev. Bishop Pezzoni said that on that auspicious occasion when they were given a detailed account of the excellent work done during the year, he considered it a duty and a plessare to address a few words to them, | First, he wished to thank His Excellency for his kindness in prosiding and distributing the prizes. He congratulated Brother Christian and the leachers on the success: they bed achieved during the year and he also con gratulated the boys" on the successful issue of their struggles on the football field. He would remind them that the development of mind and body must go hard in hand; that a sound mind le a sound body should always be their motto. It was by such means they, would be able to take their place in the great struggle of life and become worthy apd useful members of society. The Brother Director had mentioned in his repart that many of the boys were aspirants for the higher educa tion in the future Hongkong Univámity. Ho congratulated them on their ambition la that direction and wished bom all success. In after years, when these young men had reaped the benefit of their research and education they would not be namindful of their early training at St. Joseph's College. (Applause.)

"beard, you bave obtained 36 passes, in the Ox- ford Local examination as against 31 last year, and I am glad to notice that the increase in con- fined to the Senior and Junior andnot to the Pre- liminary examination. This is a good augury for uccess in the matriculation examinations for the University. I hope that the boys of St. Joseph's will be successful not only in passing the matriculation exami „ation but also in carrylog off one or more of the King Edward scholar- ships But I would remind you that the test in English will probably be a severe one, for those who pass into the'University must have a stund grasp of English, in which language the lectures will be delivered. Last year I congra- tulatadiyon especially on the fact that you'make a special study of shorthand writing. I am glad to see that that is being kept up and pro- giess being made. I would impress upon you ibat shorthand is 'a most useful acquisition. It is most useful to a public man when listening to a speech to which he has to reply, and to students, to make notes of lectures. I have always regretted that I was por laught it when I was a boy. Since I have been in this Colony the average allaodance has enlarged at St. Joseph's, the increase being from 299 to 400's that is to say 50 per cent. The enormous expansion of all the schools in this Colony is most striking and encouraging, and the Director of Education in bis report calle attention to the fact that there" are so undua number of boys, Chinese monly, in the lower standards.
