"I should like to maku a very brief reference to the way in which the sitting posture of a Japanese corpse in generally explained. One of the explanations is that it indicates religious meditation. It is also supposed to represent the position of the unborn child in the womb, which probably means that the so-called death at any Les stage of one's existenca is merely a preparation for the life to come. There are two olber ex- planations which seem to be not less probsbia than those I have already given. The sitting posture in considered honorific, especially is India where a tribal chief is baried in the pos | tuse he assumes at t'an tribal-ses, and an as- celic teacher is interred in the posture in which be addressed his pupils. The aiber explanation, which goon to the very root of the matter, is that it is merely a survival of the ancient cùs-- tom of binding a corpse to prevent the ghost THE Beamship from walking."--Ja pân Chroniais,
