The clown in that dance, the oos whom every one stepped upon, the one who was knocked about, and the object of derision, the speaker was informed, was the only trace of the once prend rulers of Kambodia and he was called Pram.

Sir Hugh Clifford, who rose amid loud plauso, said that after he lectured to them last your he took a short holiday to the French Colonies of Indo-Chine. When be visited the great rulas of Kambodia he had before him a picture of the story' he had told his audience of the rise and fall of empiros, He therefore thought he would, be able to tell them some tblog of interest about the Empire which the Brab.ains bad built up in Kambodia. He then explained the map with regard to the physical festore and the situation of Kambodia, and said it was a French Protectorate governed by a King and aided by a large force of Franch officials. It was a very uninteresting country. The chief river was the Mekong. The country was very fist and ani ject to floods, and travel- ting was a matter of considerable difficulty.

The population was about one and a half million-all Baddhists. The people were of a

the Brahmins from India into Kambodia, where they constructed their Empire. Locking, at the Kambodia of to day one wondered why these people halted there. It might have been probably owing to the enormous area, which afforded them facilities for growing rice and owing to the large quantities of fish that wers to be found in the fresh waters of Kambodia. All that rem ped to-day of the grandiose tem- ples they had roared to their Bindu gods were charred fr.gments of timbers and tiles which skowad.the immenio arat they covered. The

#olely for the honour of their god. It was obvious that the Brahmins-the brains of the kingdom-ware obj-cis of warship. He next described a voyage to Ankoa:

GRAND EMPLES." He catered into a description of the grand temples at Taprons, which he said were forty is number and were still covered with carvinge, the delicacy and fiosoess of which were not 10 be found in the more recent carvings. The aloa covered by the temples, which was some. thing like 2-0 acres, wis so overgrown with vegetation that it presented a veritable laby. riath, and, if one ventored into this laby rioth unaccompanied by native guides he would lose himself, and the chances of escape Ware very remote, Besides the beauty of the carvings which were in bas-relief, the visitor noticed an extraordinary wealth of design. The idea of the Brahmius in their architecture was to depict immensa baads of Brahma, and there were no less than arz such beads, aud these were carved out of a number of different stones all arranged to live. The original idea of the head of Brahms attempted to be depicted In these carvings was, however, like the medita tive face of Buddha.

Now one saw that these stones had been alightly separated from one another, and in. stead of the sublimely meditative face one be- held a number of gigantic grinning faces. He could assure them there could bà no sight so appalling. At Ankabat was to be found the chief work the Brahmins had erected repre- sentative of their achievements in architecture. This magnificent piece of architecture was, according to a Chicase, chronicle-the earliest record available-approching complation in 1295. The speaker descr bed in detail, the splendour and vastness.nl this temple. Ho also referred to the enormous corridors that ware to be found there. The bas reliefs on the walls, which extended to a considerable distance, depicted pictures, such as the coming of the Brahmins, their army at the balt apd move, battles fought, &c. and many of the legends of Hindu mythology.

Siamese fell upon the Brahmins, the long debt which they had incurred (for the Brahmins were held by the people in such reverence and worshipped even as gods) was paid in full. *For at 100m as the people of the country re- alised that they had been duped, as soon as they realised they were serving not gods but mno, suddenly they revolted and the whole of the Brahmin race was practically annihilat. ed. What they could trace in the work of the" Brahmins -- very conspicuously was gradual growth of the grandeur of their archi- tecture. One who made this a matter of study would feel as if a kind of madness possessed The Brahmins. They would appear to have a frantic desire to propitiate the gods on their beball. They considered no labour arduous "which they spent in the work of erecting and ornamenting these temples as sufficient atone- ment for the long tyranny they had observed. ---The immessa- amonst-of-labour-required for the construction of the temple at Ankobat- almost superkomen in itself-staggered imagi: Clara Judian, for Hongay, ination: To-day in all Kambodia they would Zoltang, for Singapore.
