RESCUERS OVERWHELMED BY AFTER-DAMP.

HEROISM OF DOCTORS AND MANAGERS,

A terrible colliery explosion, resulting in the loss of about twenty-envan lives, the dead in cluding five men who sacrificed their lives in a gallant attempt to rescue their entombed com- rades, occurred early on the morning of Octo bar 29, in South Wales. The dead juclude Mr. W. Bowen, manager, and Mr. David Lewis, under-manager,

Up to the late hour that night twenty men had been brought to the surface, but some of these are so seriously injured that they are not expected to recover. In addition to the bodies of the five rescuers, the bodies of twelve miners have been brought to the bank. Tap or elevan man are still missing, all of whom, it in feared, have either bass killed or overcome by the after-damp,

The scape of the 'disaster was the Darran Pit, of the Rybmany Iron Coy, near Hargoed, and the first fatimation of the catastrophe was the saund of a violent explosion which, at 4.30, roused the inhabitants of the quiet and peace ful district of Deri Valley from their slambers.

Forty-three men were in the pit at the time, and when the explosion occurred they were, preparing to leave the workings. They at once attempted to reach the usual outlet, but an im- penetrable barrier of afterdamp compelled them

to returo.

Messengers were forthwith dispatched, to neighbouring collieries for rescue apparatus. At last a party succeeded in reaching the spat where Mr. Bowen and the two firemen had dropped, overcome by the after-dimp, and the fears that had been entertained were found to be accurate.".

Seldom in the long gloomy apuals of col· Hery disasters has such heroism and daring 'rescue work been demonstrated. Whilst the five brave men, comprising the first rescue party were attempting to reach the imprisoned men by way of the Gilfach pil, a deed of equal, but, happily, not such falat heroism was being pasformed in another part the workings by Dr. W. Turner, of Deri.

Dr. Turner was amongst the earliest arrivals at the colliery, and immédiately be learned that two hitchers had been found at the bottom of the Darran shaft, pinned against the cage, he fasisted upon going to their assistance, although the only means of descending was by means of the ladders connected with the pumping ma- chinery. Having rendered first aid to the hit chers, Dr. Turnar veatured für.her into the workings to give assistance to other victims, he having in the meantime been joined by other rescuers, including: Mr. David Lewis, the un- der-manager. The deadly fumes in the work. ings, however, compelled the party to retreat, and on reaching the bottom of the shaft it was discovered that the doctor and Mr. Lawis moin missing.
