A STUDENT'S PRANË.

HOW A LURONG WAS BAFFLED BY A DUMMY.

Yesterday morning, a lukong was the viclim of a practical joke at the hands of a number of compatriots of the student class. The scène of the perpetration of the prank was No 18, Wellington Street. It appears that, as the previous night, a somber of students who resided in the house in question paid their rout prior to removing to another house and by way of commemorating the event in tangible form, the leading spirit of the scholastic combination suggested that they abould make up a dummy so as to make it represent a dead body and leave the rest to the Sanitary Board authorities. They stuffed a pair of legs with straw and sundry material and com plated an elaborate arrangement of joss-sticks, Jose-paper and all the rest of it demanded by Chinese rituals round the supposed corpse, and when everything was ready they left the house and waited for developments from an interest. ing point of vantage. It so happened that the darkened house did not come under the cog. biance of the Sanitary Board as quickly as It was evidently expected, for the first in- dividual to notice anything docsual about the houn, was a lynx-eyed lukong, who, on seeing a pair of legs (aboes and all) dangling from the mide of the verandab, was filled with a whole- soms terror which caused him to make a beer line for the Central Police Station in marvel- lously quick tims. Arriving there, he made a report of the gitesɔma discovery to Inspector Fenton, who requested bim to go and bava a second look. "The latter did as he was bld and. brought back with, him the remoanis of an orthodox dummy. The dammy bas since been. lying in the charge-room of the Central Police Btalion and we only hope the lakang had suficient sense of humour to appreciate the hoax.
