came into use about the same time.
Towards the end of the 15th century a book was written upon the art of reading a printed book. There were at the time so many ab. breviations to use that learning to read was a much more serious matter than it is to-day. The famous Venetian printer, Aidul blyantika, Invented Italic letters, which gained their name from his dedicating them to the Italian States In this way he get rid of most of these abbra viations. The first book in which italic appeare is the Aldine "Virgil," printed in 150i,
People who are unable to write, generally append the mark of a cross-X-as their sig. nature. This custom, which has come from very early times, was not originally confined to illiterate person's. The Empress Jusținião da creed that the sacred symbol appended to any docpment should have the force of an oath. So, for centuries it was the practice for those sign. ing any writing toʻmake the cross mark before signing.
ORIGIN OF THE ALPHABET.
Our alphabet probably had its home to Crate, and is a good deal older than was once imagin -ød. Professors_Arthur_Evans_and_Elinders- Patrie unearthed a few years ago in Crete, an alphabet which dates from at least 2000 B.C., and may be a good deal older. It was found among the remains of the wonderful palace of King Minos, on a series of clay tablets. With out any doubt, the letters are those from which our prezint ass ware derived. The Cretan letter O, for instance, is identical in shape with the modera O. So are the letters N and 1; 'while many others are very similar in form to their counterparts of 1900) 2009
·
The Phoenicians-10 constantly mentioned in the Bible, had an alphabet similar in many respects in the Cretan. With them, each single leiter had a special meaning. A, for instance, did not stand for "axe," as it does in the mod. erc spelling book, but meant "ox;" B or "bath" as they called it meantTM"house;" E-always pronounced by them in Cockney, fashion an "be"implied" window;"Fwas a peg or book.
• NUMERALS CAME FÃ?M ARABIA. Opraumerals of to-day came from Arabia, and were brought by the Moors to Spain. They "ware originally geometrical figures—1, ], }, {}, and so on each figure up to 9 baving in it as many straight lines as it implied numbers. In course of ages they have come to be written in their present form. Nations who had not this simpla system were reduced to using letters for numerals. Many more letters ware used than those at prosent employed in Roman potation, Hin mediaeval Roman stood for 200, G for 400, and over G for 400,000. In those days N was go, and 90,000 when a line was drawn Above the letter, in Phoenician. T, ibeant 160;
