INFANT MORTALITY IN BOY Public Companies.
TERRIBLE. TALE. OF-DESTRUCTION.
Cairo, August 16th, One of the most distressing features of the native life in Egypt is the great infant mortality Most of us knew that it was fairly high, but scarcely soy layman realised to what a serious extendit had developed until recent statistics brought it forcibly home to us.
During the decade 1899-1908 there were 621,396natives born in Egypt. Ofthat number, 176,391, or 28.3 per cent., mover aurvived the first anniversary of their birth and in the eight years from 19ot to 1908: 119,907 children died { under ten years of age. So serious has this feature become, that the Alexandria Municipality recently commission. ed Dr. Carpenter to investigate the subject in
that towo, and his report has just been issund. The result confirms the official statistics; in 'fact, by comparisou it shows how serious is the need of repairing this evil. Dr. Carpenter
compares the infant mortality in Alexandria in
1997 with that of other countries, and one is horrified to find that its record-31.9 per coat. is beaten by only one other State, namely,

if the report had only taken Cairo intò con sideration, it would have found that the capital came an even closer second with 32.3 per cent. Egypt had a total-infant mortality rate of 309 per cent, and the nearest foreign State is Russia,

Dr. Carpenter makes many valuable sugges ́tions for "overcoming this sad condition of" things. He recommends the institution of lady health visitors as in England, a stricter control of sage femmes, and the establishment of milk | depots and maternity bomas, Better arrange. ments for the notification of births obtain here than at home, and the co-operation of health and registration officers which exists out here owing to their being directly under one head, ́will go a long way towards ensuring the succese
