NO NEWS OF THE SLOOP
H.M.S. Clio, which left Shanghai, for Hong- kong last week, is sów overdue, four days from the Northern port. Fear is entertained that the sloop encountered the typhoon which struck the Coast between the night of the 14th and the morning of the 15th inst. Owing to her non-arrival in Hoogkong anxiety is felt for ibo vessel's safety, although it might not at all be improbable that, if she had been disabled in the storm, she might have s-ught shelter in one of the numerous bays on the coast awaiting assistance from Hongkong or Shanghai.
Up to this morning the Naval authorities bere have had no further news of the aloop since bar departure from Shangbai, and on inquiries we elicited the information, that no vessel, had been dispatched ham Hangkong in search for the Clio although one of Hin Majesty's cruisere -.M.S. Astvacs, according to our telegram- bad set out from Shanghai to look for the over- dua vessel.
The Clio is commanded by Commander, C. T. Borrest and has à complement of 130

In connection with the Bombay cotton mand- facturing crisis the cotten mills managed by Messes, Greaves, Cotton and Co. were informed by the mill authorities that the mills will not work in September for thren days in the work nad will be entirely closed in October. To- day being September 1, says a Bombay correspondent, the operatives, about 8,000 in number, assembled at the mills and refused to work and demanded their wages for Augusti They said the utmost the mills might be closed was for two days in the week, or they claimed that instead of closing them entirely from October they might be closed from to-day and that they should be paid-off.
