All these three institu- tions have since disappeared, and with them a number of other institutions which were formed shortly after the Chartered came into existence, There was, indeed, a turore for forming ladian baoks between 1854 and 1868, and for a time | many of these institution showed great pro... | sperity, India, indeed, seemed to have benefited very much by the Civil War in the Waited States, which led to a suspension of cotton growing in the Bouthern States and encouraged the io | dustry in Bombay. The bigh prices prevailing for cotton led to great profits for a time, which, woen peace came in the Stains, was followed by a grant collapse. A crisis about 1865-6, which ied to the failure of the Bank of Bombay, the Agra Bank and a number of other jostitutions materially reduced the competition axparienced by those institutions which survived.
