[From Our Own Correspondent.]

Canto, 4th September. The Canton gantry have received a telegram. from the Shanghai Total, HE. Trai Nai- huang, advising that the Naval Commissioners,. Admiral Sab Chen-plog and Prince Shop Pai- lap, are proceeding to the South and are ex pected to arrive at Canton on the 8th instant. to make an inspection of the naval bares. It is urged to the telegram that a warm reception should be accorded to the Commissioners. SELF-GOVERNMENT SOCIETY TO CO-OPERATE. The Canton Self-Government Society has also received a despatch from the High Au thorities informing it of the Commissioners' expected--arrival at the Southern Capital. The Society is requested to co-operate with the officials in arranging a fitting reception in honour of the distinguished officials. ., .. ADMIRAL LI CHUN LEAVES FOR HONGKONG. HE. stated last week, another syndicate is at work looking for gold, and should it prove, to be the case that there is a prospect for this metal we shall see the New Territories in the throes of a "boom" which may or may not be beneficial to Hongkong. It does not matter that the gold quartz_discovered by the prospectors was assayed at a non- paying value the supreme fact is that gold has been found. One is inclined to wonder whether those engaged at the Beacon Hilltun. nel made any effort to learn whether there was MANUFACTURERS. anything in the supposition that mineral possi. bilities did exist in Hongkong's hinterland, forit might be conjectured that if the Kowloon bills were auriferous traces would have been found in the material excavated and those engaged in the search for pres would have had something to go upon. f course it is not to be expected that a gold mine is likely to be located at the first time of investiga tion or that coal and iron are to be found right off the reel. The probability is that if the prospectors are to succeed at all it will be more by accident than anything else. Most, if not all, of the world's mines have been stumbled on rather than laboriously prospected, and it has not always been the experts who have been the fortunate indivi duals to secure the riches.. Altogether it STONE GINGER;BEER. would seem that there are at present three mining syndicates on the outlook for miner rals in the New Territories, and it is practi- cally certain that up sooner will one of these enterprising ventures find the 'basis of a fortune than others will spring up and over- run the country in the race for wealth. Were the mining industry to prove anythingly like remunerative then Hongkong might shap her fingers at the question of taxation and the development of the Federated Malay; States as a rubber-producing centre. For those reasons, if for no other, the Colony will watch with interest the progress of the mining syndicates, in the hope and belief that their success will tend to benefit Torig.HE. into the burning craft, but all their efforts proved futile. The cargo-boat drifted up-stream owing to an unfavourable wind and aggressive

tide. Tha current bore the cargo-boat to as far as the French gunboat Vigilante's Proicon and got alongside of it. The fire in a short time spread to the psatoon, which sustained damages to the extent of a few thousand dollars. The cargo-boat then again drifted and got alongside the south bund of Shameen, where assistance, was rendered by the shameen Fire Brigade and several steam- launches working jointly. After vigorous efforts to combat the flames, the fire was got under control. By that time, the kerosace, ored in iron drums, was burat up and the cargo-boat itself was completely, destroyed, producing a weird effect with smouldering planks and oil floating in all directions. A Water Police launch which had tried to tow the cargo-boat away from the jetty, gat her own awnings des." troyed and bar, stern damaged. Fortunately Do loss of life has been reported.
