We (Singapore Free Press) regret to see the announcement in the Ceylon papers of the death of Mr. Charles G. Warnford Lock, which took place at Bandarawella, Ceylou, on July 30th. Mr. Lock was lately in the Straits and was not them very well. He went to Ceylan and there' underwent an operation in May, from the effects of which be sever recovered, The immediate cause of death was heart failure. The funeral took place at Nuwara Eliya on Aug. rat, and many friends whom Mr. Lock had made during his comparatively short stay there followed his remains to the grave.

~~~~A WONDERFUL-MONUMENT~ The Exposition monument stands in the plaza in front of the United States Government building. It will be entirely covered with gold from Alaska and the Yukon, and its splendour will be one of the features of the Ex position. It is eighty feet high. At the base are four figures, emblematle of the Northland, the Southern Pacific Countries, the Pacific Const and the South Seas. The column is Corinthian, with an ornamental shaft carrying an astronomical globe showing the signs of the rodine and summousted with the American eagle. About $7,con worth of gold dust will be used to gild the monument.

At the bead of the Cascade Court stands, a monsment typifying the "Spirit of the Pacific," the sculptor having used the aboriginal races of the Pacific Coast countries as models for his central figuros.
