The Clarke buating and scientific expedition bas bead attacked by the Chinese in Northern
Kansu. Au Indian surveyor leased by H. M. Government was killed. A. de C. Sowerby, formerly master of the Anglo-Chinese College, Tientsin, was captured by the natives, Lieut. It appears, says the same paper, that the Indian, who was killed, was more or less res- pansible. He left Lapchoufu and some distance from the city trouble occurred between him and Chinese. He was murdered. Mr. Sowerby, alone, had also left the City to study the flora and fauna in the neighbourhood. The Chinese, excited by the murder of the Indian, attacked him, but making a show of fores, he kept them at bay until Capt. Douglas, the British officer who is in charge of the expedition, gathered
together a relief pany and came to the rescue. A severe fight onsaed, conspicuous bravery being shown by Mr. Robert Colman and & German--representative we believe of Mataro. Telge and Shroeter-both of whom
