ROMANCES OF, PEARLS OF GREAT PRICE.

At last the pearl has been staged. After playing an important role in historical ro ¦ mances of real life it has been dramatized, with | the most superficial life of Greater New York as its environment:

12

In her new comedy, "Sham, Miss Henrietta Crosman, who plays the role of a bankrupt, spendthrift society girl, eventually falls in love with a straight-forward, bonnet-purposed man who bates debts, falin appearances, all the tigile shams which presumably mark the exist sace of the once-rich society girl. To save her reputation in his eyes and incidentally to feel to accept his proposal, she decides to sall her pearls, the one family heirloom left. But, he learns that bar, equally spendthrift father had sold the original and real pearls and substituted cheap imitations which their butter- fly world had 'nover detected as false. What happens to the baničup! Heiress and what was the ending of dramatʼzed pearls bavo uoibing to do with this story, but the attitude of the woman in the audience when the short string of pearls is spoken of as worth $10,000 is generally amu sing.

·

Why, they ain't any thing compared with diamonds!"

"Just think of paying $20,000 for a few pearls like that ↑ "

These and similar comments which can be heard any night at the play-house show bow little the average woman'knows of the true value of pearls.

giversary of the pair's marriage and was one of the prettiest romances New York ever had.jp

Law units. have sprang from dispatas over pearls. The United States government lost its case when it tried to force Barnard Citroan, a Parisian jeweller, to pay 60 per cent. duty or $110,000, 00 a pearl necklace made for Mrs.. William B. Leade, wife of the former president of the Rock Island road.. Mrs. Leads had ot- dered the necklace in Paris, and the price stipulated was $540,000. Citroen claimed that the pearls were shipped to Mrs. Leeds as in dividual paaris, dutiable as so per cent. The customs department, hold them as a necklace, on which the duty would be do per cant, of their apprised, value, and the war over the famed necklace was waged for mobibs and created a great senzation.-Weis York World."

The dowager queen of Italy. Margherita; has A passion for pearls, and they form the most extravagant feature of her personal possession. It is said that her collection is worth $1,750,000.

Quecu Alexandra of England prefers pearls to diamonds, and is especially fond of comblo- ing them with lustrous white satin. When she appears 1 a drawing room clad in this com

bination she wrats not less than $750,000 worth of pratis in ropes and ornaments. She also has a most magnificent pearl dog collar. The Ger- into Empress owns pearls to the amount el $1,150,000, and the Czarina of Russia con value hers at $500,000, but neither the German vor Russian queen wears pearls for pure love of the gems as does Margherita of Italy and Alexandra of England,

pearls.

History has helped to make many a pearl famous. The late Queen Victoria of England was extremely lonu of a certain necklace of -pink pearls worth £30,000, and she” often worn them without any other jewel to detract atten tion from them. One of the most interesting evcats attending the accession of her son Ed. ward to the throne was the recovery of the black pearl, of priceless value, which disap peared from the English diadem in 1751, and which was unearthed in a Hupgarien paw- shop and restored to its Impérial position, to' the joy of all Great Britain.
