Despatch of the 12th December last, that in my opinion, force expressed, the Board of Trade and the Law Officers of the Crown.

Colonial Law cannot properly authorize deportation to any place beyond the limits of the Colony,

and I desire to be informed whether any and what steps have been taken to carry out the amendments in the Colonial Law, in accordance with the directions which were pointed out in that Despatch.

Should such steps have been taken, I request that the subject may receive consideration at the earliest opportunity.

Though I trust that the representation made to the French Government may prevent a recurrence of these shipments of Chinese, I am prepared to consider any measure which it may be thought desirable or expedient to...
