ALI MAHOMMED, a seaman, in the employ of one of the Apcar steamships, is charged in the Police-Court, yesterday morning, with assaulting one Wong Leung, an opium diyan keeper, of 6, Cheung Hiog Street, and with doing damege to property to the extent of seventy cents. A quarrel, it would seem, took place between the Chinaman and the Lancar, with the result that the latter struck the Celes tial in the face, and in bis "white" hent, des- royed some opium-smoking paraphernalia. On the first charge he was fined 51, on the second count $2, and also ordered by the Magistrate to pay the complainant one dollar compensa. 1100.

He has been in the diplomatic service for many years. He began his career in the American Legation at Peking as long ago as 1884, While on duty there he managed to make several extensive trips through various parts of the empire and acquired a a great store of information on things Chinese.
