FLOODS ON THE WEST RIVER, [From Our Own Correspondent.]

Canton, 11th May... Owing to the beavy and continuous rain dure lng last week, which has caused the West River to swell over twenty feet above the normal level, yesterday the embankments of the Wing Fang Wai in Samshul district gave way and the water rushed over the land in large volumes, driving the inhabitants to the bills for refuge. The villagers sounded googs all day as warnings to collect together and work strenuously to repair the broken dykes by means of wooden piling and guany bags filled with sand. The houses in the lower lavels have been ouded to the extent of a few feet and considerable damage has beau des The dykes in the riveride, districts along the West River are now all in danger of being

'brokes and should the weather, remain un-

favourable for one or two days longer, it is feared that last year's disastrous floods which swept the country will be agalu repeated on this occasion.

The Central Relief Commites yesterday

sent out two parties, one on board the launch Kong Flung to the North River and the other on board the San Chung to the West River with a quantity of necessary articles and food stuff to assist the flood sufferers,

The Viceroy also depated a waiyuan" to proceed up the West River to make an inspec tion of the dykes and in ascertain the extent of the floods. He also brought with bim 1,000 gunny bags to the finoded districts on board the Government launch Chai Tal.

UNDER TEST.

:

As daly announced in our columos last week H.M.S. Astra, which left Shanghai yesterday (5th inst), made her exit from the Honogru through the new jurk Chanuel in order to lea the progress of the Huangpu Conservancy work, That the attempt may fairly be described as a complete success is all the more gratifying, not only in view of the despondent predictions which have been made, but because the Conservancy is at present working at a disadvantage in that it cannot avail itself of the full strength of the stream until the Ship Channel is closed. That cannot take place until the passage through the Junk Channel is spacious enough to take the whole stream, so that for the moment the full depth has to be provided with something like half the full amount of water. As the Astræa draws 33 ft of water when steaming at average speed, yesterday's test is a fair indication of what has been done already,

The Asires, under the command of 'Capt F. E.Ryan, .., left Shanghai about eleven o'clock in the morning, attended by the torpedo-boat destroyers Warting and. Hart and the tender 'Alexandra. On board there was a party of visitors, including Capt.-17. P. Heard, of H.M.S. Cadmus, M, Ratard, Consul Generalfor France, Capt, W. A. Carlson, the Harbour Master Capt R.
