HONGKONG'S INVITATION TO SHANGHAL. -

Mr. R. N. Anderson, Hon. Secretary of the Shanghai Cricket Club, has received a letter

Club, loviting Shanghai to head down to Hongkong an Interpost cricket team early in November of this year. A similar invitation has been extended to the Straits Settlements, so that there is every prospect of a triangular context taking place, in Hongkong, in the autums. The last occasion on which Hong kung, Shanghai and the Straits were opposed to each other in Interport cricket was in the autome of 190s at Hoogkong, when the Straits (116 and,232) beat Hoogkong (155 and 119), Hongkong (175 and tog for 6 wkts.) defeated Shanghai (279 and ($1), and the Striits (93 and 191) beat Shanghai (1+8 and 113.)

factor in the prosperity of the Bombay mills: The démand from the Far East was showing a rexil oɔce which was a grent source of strength. Last year the shipments of yara to China in creased by 7.22. per cent; devertheless the year closed with the unusually small balance of 27,000 bales in stock, and a demand from all quarters which gave promise of an even better trade dur that there was scope for shipment of fifty thousand bites more than last year, and even then the supply is likely to fall short of the demand owing to the, excellent harvests and the liberation of money formerly wasted upon opium. It was not long since the China market was regarded as a vanishing one for Bombay. It was, now certain that with the THE P&O SN development of that huge Empire by means of railways, and the increase in the purchasing power of the people through the eradication of the opium babit, Bombay could and a profit- uble field for yarn and cloth in China for many year to come. Of course the competition of Japan as well as the growth of the indigenous industry, would have to be faced. But Japan is straining her labour supply so hard, and the cost of living is increasing so rapidly, that Bombay need not be over-anxious regarding competition from that quarter, provided her business machinery does not fall behind.
