THE EMPEROR'S FUNERAL.

and May

For many wocks past, don has been able to wach the prepirations being made for the Im» perial Funeral which took place yesterday, The wall of the Forbidden City, nist "of the Coal' Hill, 'has long been lined with tenis, erected for workmen busy-constructing a raised tead, and, during the last week or so, the roads norib and mist of the Imperial City, and the ons along which the procession was to park, ou its way from the Pingdsemento the Tombs, bave been kept clear of traffic. As the day approach. ed, applications for tickets of admission to the Pavilion at the Hsi Seu Pilou began to pour into the Lugations. Many people, I believe, had to be turned away, for the tickets were, naturally, limited, but all who were unable to get them had only to`go aufside the Plugdsenta where, by special tecree, they were allowed to witness the procession. The representatives of the various Legations were given a Pavilion leside the Houmen, close to the spot where the late Emperor was lying.

The Pavilion at the Hi Seu Pilou, where 1 saw the procession, had this advantage ovey the one erected inside, the Houmĉo, that the cortège, by the time it reached us, had assumed the form, in which, 1 suppose, it is, af this moment, slowly moving towards the hills. Many people, I know, were disappointed when they heard that the, representatives of the Foreign, Diplomatic Body would not accom- pany the procession all the way to the Pingdae- 7m, On what, quite, their disappointment reign officials was desirable connialy io so was bared, do not see. The presence of faray it indicated sympathy and respect. From

At this pint there was a short" gap, and then white discs of paper, cut to resemble copper cath and fung high into the air, announced the approach of the hearse. It was borns by one hundred and twenty-sight bearers, whose red dresses contrasted vividly with its brilliant yellow, and after it came another body of troops and then

a crowd of caris.

So the procession ended, and. passed, and this bald description of it can give little idea of its brilliance.
