A wask ago, the story goes, three cattle dealers arrived in the Colony from San MI village, bringing with them several hands of cattle, which they took to the slaughter house at Kennedy Town and sold for over $600. They stayed here for a few days visiting old friends, and at about four o'clock on Wednesday moming started' to catch the San Mi launch. The launch was due to leave at five p'clock or shortly after, The rest could be told in the cattle dealers' words,

THREE JUDGMENTS ENTERED AGAINST HIM,

**15 1613; thres” of the principal, men of Macao endeavoured at Canton to demonstrate the necessity of walling and fortifying the place, because the Dutchers anemies both of Por togel and Spals. Though a formal consent could not be obtained, bountiful presente inay clined the mandarins to wink at the building of wall which runs north cast from the (1622) Maote to the sea near St. Francis. The for tress of St. Paul was (1615) so far advanced that Francis Lopes Carraico came from Goa (1616), and took up his residence within the limite of the Monte, most probably lo the capacity of a military captain (capirde de genin de guerra),

"Fearing that Macao might (after 1619) be visited by the Dutch, two hundred Spanish io. fantry and some cannon came from Manila, under the command of a colonel. By his industry, and the activity of D. Francis Mascarenhas, à, military captain, Macao was walled and better fortified. To judge from the date engraved ons stone placed above the gateway, the work might have been completed in 1616,"

It appears from the foregoing that the city wall dates from 1626. At that period neither Fortugal por China dreamt of delimitations.

The only structure which speaks from the *olden days, of China's desire to delimit Macao, is the wall raised by the Chinese Government in 1575 across the isthmus connecting, Macao with the Hangshan district, and it is this wall that is called Barrier, and has a gate in the middle. There aziat vestigds of this wall.

Beyond this Barrier wall, the Portuguess have not advanced a single step, neither after the Treaty of 1887 nor

nor before. Now, between this wall styled the Barrier, built in 1973, and the city wall built in s6z6, lies to territorial zone, which the apitators of the meetings in Caston allege to have been usurped by the Portuguese since the last Luso-Chinesa Treaty of 1887 was con- cluded; and the Shanghal weekly republishes the allegations and quotes the names of villages which are given a phonetic rendering that we can with dificulty identify,
