Hearing privately from Mr Hughes that the Governor General Juilin had been urging him to become his intermediary with the Colony, and being, as my last Despatch will No 122 of May 26th have shown Your Lordship, in despair of effecting any arrangement with the Yamen, I Ed Mr Hughes, Shan acknowledged proceeding cautiously on the lines that may be done at his end.
I confess that, anxious as I am to spare the Colony unnecessary annoyance, and to ensure to it, if possible, the trade it possesses duly secured against abuse, I am not the less moved by the chance of a collision between the Colony and the local Executive.
