Apparently nothing was observed from the visiting launch which furnished any in dication that salviog operations were in progress, but upon closer inspection is was seen that pumps had been installed on the fare hatch of the Beandia. The steamer had thrown out a ropa from her bow by means of which she was mado fast to the rock ashore. While the engines oporating the pump were 'blowing off steam no discharge of water from the pipes over the side of the Scandia was discernible front the launch and the conjecture was formed that pos sibly the pumps might have hạn ́ased to forca, air into the bold in which the coolies were working gesting off the cargo. If any divers had been at work at the time of our in- formant's visit nose could be seen at that time. Besides the Nicomedia and the David Gillies, the only other vessel near was a large launch which carried fannel with a double red band, probably one of the familliar fleet be- longing to Mesure, Tak Kee & Co. That launch was supposed to maintain the despatch service between the Scandia and Hongkong.
