eventful, but nine days ago, when the Solace Until Singapore the voyage had been on left that port for Hongkong, the passengers were thrown into the greatest excitement by what then happened. The Salaris left port two o'clock in the afternoon, when many of the passengers were on deck and in the saloon, the report of a revolver shot gave the alarm that something was amiss in one of the cabins For a time the utmost confusion prevailed, and then it was fearred that a French passenger had been put in irons by the officers and that his wife was dead, shot by her husband, evid eatly in a fit of madness. The name of the man, who was about thirty-six years of age, was Mas sol, and it appeared that he and his wife, a lady considerably younger than himself, in fict scarcely twenty years old, were on their way to Saigon. Accompanying them was a young child, ons of their family of three, the other two remaining at home. It is reported that Mrs. Massol, who with her husband travel led second class, had become very friendly with a first class passenger, also French, during the course of the voyage, and the theory is that this intimacy, evidently of a harmless nature, had roused the husband's jealousy. Before the tragedy Maisol was last seen about two o'clock drinking in the saloon, and shortly thereafter he left. It was shortly before three o'clock that the revolver shot was fired, and it is stated that
