I have looked up most of the fish in theed at once, at Consignees' risk and expense.,, standard Malay-English dictionary, ouly, to find the word "unidentified” and so am "no
forrarder." But, roughly speaking as regards general appearance, habits and more important std, flavour, we have fish which correspond to ke barracoula, sea porch, mackerel, muliet, whiting, 'pilchard, sprat, whitebait, besides many others which give great sport and are excellent eating, locally known as, “demuduk," "chermin," "jibong," "lenggiri," and dozens of others.
Some idea may be formed ofthe abundance of fish by quoting local prices. At Pekan, six miles from the sea, you can buy sixteen line. caught "risi"-which to my mind correspond to the waiting for the equivalent of a penny, and on the beach a basket-similar to the Folkestone mackerel, baskel-heaped up with net caught fish, may be purchased for one dottar.
