A GIGANTIC PROJECT.
The construction of the canal, Dr. Coinish pointed out, involved two laiks-excavation and the construction of dams and locks. The controlling feature of the scheme was the great dam at Gatun, which would retain a like 164 square miles in area, or thrice the [511ze of Lake Maggiore. From shore to shore the canal would be 41 miles long, but to reach deep water four miles must be dredged at either side, so that the whole length would ba 49 miles, of which about nine miles had to be excavated in hard rock. The Spooner Act, the law under which, the canal "was being constructed, laid down that it should he "of sufficient capacity and depth as shall afford convenient passage for vases of the largest-tossage and greatest draught now in use, and such as may reasonably be expected." According to the calculations of the United States Hydrographic Bureau, ho stated, the reduction in the steaming distance from New York to Paname, or any port on the Pacific Coast of America north of Panama, would be 8,400 miles. From New York to poits on the American Pacific Coast south of Padama the reduction ranged from 8,400 miles to about 1,000 miles. The correspond. ing reduction in the steaming distance from t.iverpool to the, sime coasts ranged from 6,005 la 2,600 miles. The figures for Antwerp were about the same. From New York to Yokubama, via San Francisco the reduction was 3,719 miles bringing the Japanese port 1,805 miles nearer to New York thao to Liverpool From New York to Shanghai the reduction was 1,619 miles, which felt Liverpool, 295 miles nearer to Shanghai.
