ESE VOLUNTEER FLEET.

· SUBSIDY WITHDRAWN,

The Volunteer Fleet, the organisation of | which has been undertaken by the Imperisj Marina Society, would seem to be doomed by the withdrawal of the subsidy which, it was promised, should be granted to the Volunteer Fleat steamer Sakura-maru, recently built st the Mitsu Bishi yard. From a statement in the Oraka Asaht it appears that the withdrawa of the subsidy is due to the disapproval by the Formosan Government of the demand for an appropriation of Y260,000 to the Sakura-mCKY A out of the Formosan Treasury, and the disin- clination to advance this sum is the result of the decision of the Government to appropriate for the Imperial Treasury half the Customs revenue of Formosa, which is estimated at about Y1,300,ood for next year. The whole Customs revenue of Formosa, we understand, is to be transferred to the imperial revenue e next year, and is likely to prove a heavy blow to the future development of Formosan resources, to these circumstances, the arrange meat to run the Sakura-maru on the Formo- sap-service under the management of the Osaka Shoten Kaisha has been abandoned, and the Marice Society, the owner of the steamer, bas
