OPIUM IN PAHANG,
REPORTED INCREASE IN DUTY, There has been a tamour for some time past that the duty on opium imported into the Federated Malay States would shortly be con- siderably increased and this has been con firmad at least in so far as the State of Pahang is concerded. In accordance with a clause in the contract for: Pahang-Farms for the years 1908-9, the British Resident of that State can al any time during the continuance of the period of the contract alter the duties feviable on the import of spirits, opium or tobacco so as to be Unhappily, since the emering of the Man-higher than the duties in force at the time of churians, our people of Hao (China proper) are signing the aforesaid contract.
