CHEAP PASSAGE RATES TO AMERICA.
Cheap trips across the Pacific, $20 a head, or About Y40, are now being offered. Seattle'pa› | pere state that a rate fight to secure the Chinese passenger buginaes from the United States to the Orient has been started by Frank Water house & Co. on their ships to the Far East by cuiting the fare more than half and offering special inducements to all Chinese travellers their boats, The re,ular fare to China from Puget Sound is $43.50 on all the lloers except those of the Great Northers and the Canadian. Pacifc. The Minnesota is the only verrel Rail ing from Seattle that charges the maximum. amount of 551, the same as the Canadian Vessels. With the sallag of the Kumeric of the Waterhouse lips last month the spor cial face of 515 for steerage passengers wan! into effect. At this time of year many Orl entals are returning to their native country for the Chinese New Year and other fete days, The outward bound, ships from Puget Sound have been doing a large steerage business to the Orient for several weeks. The special rate of Sag on the Kumeric Included a rebate of 55 at the end of the trip, making the rate in reality Szo, sad this resulted in many passengers al Vancouver, although few took advantage of the rate in Seattle. The first response to the cul rate is from the Canadian Pacific, which has' made a special fare of $43.50 on the Honteagle, which sailed from Vancouver for the Orinat op
November 7th. [The Montaigle nived in Hongkong to-day, and Dec.]. The Blue Funnel and Japanese liners are also expected to make cuts in their rates as the result of the action of the Waterhousecompany.
