one pagada was destroyed for military reasons. KWONG LOONG & CO.,

This was the Pai-ts at Pal-ta-pu, south of Mukden. Singularly enough the several pagodas on eminences around Mukden ware not molested. But this one in the plain, was, according to foreign observers, blown up on March 9 by Russians in the withdrawal after the Baule of Mukden. It was a landmark, but small-and-relatively unimportant as a monu ment. The Japanese troops used the bricks' for mending roads.

Pagodas arn not seen north of Kai-yuan in Manchuria. A pagoda dated about 1878, quite a small one, is to be seen at Yi-la seventy miles northeast of Mokden.

THE IMPERIAL PALACE AT MUKDEM.

The Imperial Palaces of China may be re garded as amongst the most precidai.mona- mente of their kind in the world. The Img perial Government has recently repaired the nocestral palace at Mukden, preserving its un- cient appearance, and has put away in, the Ancestral Hail there the records of the Imperial family history sent: from Peking.... in October. The yukden Palace is much smaller than any palace at Peking sad is more barbaric in structure and appearance. It was badly rained and all, the minor buildings had collapred. The 'Manchurian 'Viceroy spent an estimated sum of $200,000 Mexican in restoring the place to something like its original appearance. 、'

This palace is said to contain the finest sipgly collection of Imperial porcelain and Chinese art works to be found in China, though the extent and value of the collection may be exaggerated. It is, however, the won der of visitors. The collection has for years been piled up in complete disorder in little crowded buildings, uscared for though no molested even by invaders. Much bas, per baps, deteriorated and some things have doubt 'less' been entirely destroyed.. The embroi-

The Imperial family, records,, erroneously called the history of the dynasty, that, hava iately been placed in the Mukdan Palace, were conveyed thither with great ceremony by Priące | Li. His departure from Peking was one of | the events of the year and said to be one of the moet dignified and elegant ceremonials that foreigners have ever witnessed in Peking. A special train took the Prince and his suite, and the precious records, on jadé, to Mukden. The arrival there of the party is described as haring been very showy." About five thousand troops were drawn up to receive it. The Prince gave a reception to the Consular body. It was a part of his mission to visit the famour Fu-ling and Fui-ling, the tombs of the Manchu king- dom.
