THE DECLINE IN SILVER.

"CAUSK ́AND EFFECT,

The Osaka Aazki, in an atlicis on the de- clion in the silver market, remarks that this | year everything has been inactive. The de pression has affected foreign trade, and the export of goods to Chips has particularly suffst ed Since January the valos of exports to China has fallen off month by mouth, and a heavy depreciation is shown is compared with last year, as may be seen from the following figures 2—

January...... February March!... cudum April May

This Year, Last Year: ¥3,5×2,259 - Y4,574,974 5,034,983 ** 7,932,107 f,782,043. 7,347.969 6,455,406 7,445,418 6,224,731

During the period given above the silver market in London continued to decline, with consider able fluctuations in the rate of exchange on

Chion. It is not surprising, therefore, that the trade of Japan with China is very unsatisfactory Since July last the silvar market has remained low. Landes, advices of the goth last month qubled the mela at 73 7-16, This was the lowest rate on record since 1901 or 1902,. when a lower rate kao zid, was recorded." The market funber declined, and, on the next day (5181) stood at 23, 1-16d. On the 4th ist

OPIUM IN CALCUTTA,

We think it in time that something' should, be dose to check the growth of the opium habit to Calcutta. ... Doring the last official yevr^ 93 more maunds of opium were sold in this city, and oplum smoking les stated to be on the increase. The Superintendent of Excite Revenue states that opium dens in Calcatta, which are now called clubs, continue to flour ish and multiply. They are described as being located in places extremely difficult of access, and that only known and trust. ed customers are admitted. In the result oplam smoking is now more freely indulg. ed in than when these premises were up dar Government control, and indeed it is re- marked that this evil has ceased to attract at- tention with the withdrawal of Government castrol. In addition, 470 maunds of gans were sold in Calcatta, the drag being stated to be in requisition by the increasing mill po- patation in the city, Howrah and neighbour hood. The consumption of 'siddhi" is also on the increase, and a fists for charas la being cultivated. Cocaine is being smuggled in increasing quantity into the city, which already rejoices in a well-established trade in morphia pills.-Indian Daily Near.

PRACTICE DANGE, WEDNESDAY, 3th Novembar from 5 toy P.M."

DONKEY TRYING, DA Nobody can tell what he can do till he tries. When a thing ought to be done the modern ST. ANDREW'S BALL`38th November, 1908 spirit moves us to keep, working away at it until it is done. In the face of this idea the "impossible vanishes. Where there's a will, there's a way. If we could but rob cod liver oil of its sickening taste and smell and then combine it with two or three other ingredients we should possess the best remedy in the world for certain diseases that are now practically incurable," So said a famous English physl clan twenty-five years ago. "But it will never be done," he added. "You can no more turn cod liver oil into a pleasant palatable medicine, than you can turn the Codfish itself into a Bird of Paradise. Yet he lived to admit that in

WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION the "impossible" had been accomplished. It is palatable as boney and contains all the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver, Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites, Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. This remody is freed from the bad peculiarities Dr. Frothingham so detested, and it is precitaly the splendid medicine he wished for. Use it freely and confidently for Anemia, Hysteria, Wasting Complaints, Blood Impuri- tios, Asthma, and Throat and Lung Troubles, Dr. W. B. B. Aikins, F. R. C, P.; London, M. D. 10 32 3-tód, last year, it was explained that the rise was due to the action of the French Go- veroment, which was buying matal for coinage, having made a farther purchase of gɔ,20 lbs. The depreciation to the market this year' is abe scribed, to' various causes, (1) the decling in the demand in China and India'; (2) the active speculation in silver engaged in between Indian merchants (buyers) und Loudon merchants (sellers); (3) the increased produc tion of silver incident on gold, or copper mis- ing and (4) the remarkable divergency in .demaid tetween gold and silver, the demand for silver increwing at a much slower rate than that for gold. No noticeable increase bas been seen of late years in the output from the silver miner of the world, but the output of silver from copper mides has increased, as tho methods of working the mines have become more expert, so that it is indisputable that the production of silver bas increased.”~` It mast also be admitted that the desire for gold, hay increased generally much more than that for silver. Moreover, the afáčkness in the demand for silver in China and India—a most import-. ant factor, as it influences the silver market of the world-is nione sufficient to account for Fibe decline to the markets. –The exact polot” of the relative value of silver to gold is exceed. ingly difficult to gauge; but the high rate. of between god. and 334. ruling the year before last and that of 31d. or 32d, quoted is the first half of last year were the highest recorded during the past decade, while the present rate-below 23d—is the lowest record. ed since 190 or 1902. These rates are abnor- mat at either extremis, and it is in the natural order of things that the abatrmal gives way in time to the normal, The abnormally low price pl of silver will be followed by a decrease of sup- ply as a matter of course. When this occurs, the sub-market willundoubtedly improve. The increased. supply of silver of late, however, is accounted for. by the increased production of the metal, and
