The Rivus writer goes on tu show that there is ¡opjum and opium. --- Thebaiqs-having aö action about 25 times as that of morphine, it fol- lows that an opium in which these two alkaloids were present in the proportion of 1 to 25 would be innocuous. Now, the opium of fadia, that of Benares, for instance, contains 7 per cent of morphine sad do thebaine whatever; .. Chinese opium contaior fram 5 to 6 per cent. of mor- phine and oxó per cent of thebaine. It will thus be seen that while the opium of China is only slightly harmful, that of India is a veritable poison.
