OPENING OF CAMP OF INSTRUCTION.

GOOD ATTENDANCE.

19th.inst.

Those who happened to pain up ned down Blake Pler on Saturday afternoon had the pri. vilege of observing unusual fs and bustle on "the pier. The reason is as far to seek when it is known that Saturday marked the delat of the whole v. lustrering senson, zamely, the opening of the annus Lamp of Instruction at tonecutter's [-land.

Long before the scheduled timanttarked for the spacious launch which waito carvey mem. bers of the Corps to the ished, there was a' strung muster solunteers assembled on the laiding stage, all nexious to proceed by the first suech Although here was a continuous service sett up to sod from: taber utler's Island for the rest of the sterre or by far the greater m jority boarded the first launch, which left

Blake Pier shortly after 2.45-

Soon after striving, at t a scene of the next fortnight's exertione, all units of the Corps set to work in real sirues, and the most captious cynic who is inclined to cavil at the doings of the Volunteers would b.ve changed his mind at the spirit of co operation and the shear dis regard to shirk real, solid work on the part of our civilan soldiers. No sooner had the tents been allotted to the different sub-divis ons, and the man's fecis safely deposited, than every man Jack commercrd to put tight any discrep ancy in the erection of their tents which is natural on such occasions, such as digging pegs into the round, hailowing out trenches to prevent the vain water from forcing its way into the tea's, the tigh coing of ropes, sic. The engineering section of the Corps proved their usefulness in practical way

by making steps on the elevated porti ns of the ground and supply. ing the tents with electric lights. The men's capacity to make themselves useful was truly remarkable, which only gres to show that it is by ue means a case of "all play and no work" with the volunteers, as st me people would have believe. ¡
