The most dramatic moment of the afternoon came when Captain Luard, in answer to the „coroner's summons, entered the room, seated himself on the little platform, and grave. ly perused the letter from his father which the coroner handed to him. I (bought that my strength was sufficient to bear up against the horrible imputations and terrible letters which I have received since that awful crime was committed which robbed me of my happiness. And so it was for long, and the goodness, kiuduoss, and sympathy of so many friends kept me going. "But somehow, now in the last day or two something seems to have snapped. "Ever yours.

C: E. LUARD. "It is all the horrid letter (destroyed) and tbo insinuations that have been made.")

THE CORONER ON ANONYMOUS LETTERS. The Coroner, in summing up after recounting the events of General Luard's military career, alluded to the murder of Mrs. Leard on August 24, which he said was still the subject matter of investigation by a jury. "But I think it is my duty," be continued, "to make some kind of reference to the many raporis, the many base insinuations in the shape of anonymous letters, which have been written to General Luard, suggesting, almost that he is responsible for the death of his wife. Tboss letters have been inaumerable. They have been received by the police and by myself in any number. But

need hardly tell you, that I have simply put them into the wastspaper basket, and have been disgusted with them,

ipl

"It is a feature of English justice, and we - hope will ever remain so, that cintil a man is proved to be guilty of any crime wo must as- same him to be innocent. The persons who have been prompted to write there laiters have not been satisfied to let the general remain with his grief, and to iyimpathing with him in his great trouble, but have added to the poig nancy of that grief: and 1'imagion that, sansi, zive and honourable mau “as he was they have made his life almost unbearable. That, no doubt, was a great factor in inducing him to rid himself of this present life, and, an he said,, join his wife. Let us hops, that the writers of these letters, if they have any con- sciences at all, will reflect and feel, at any rate, that they must have contributed more or less. to the doom to which the general went himself, Let us hope that, although they treated bim so badly.in the last remaining days of his life, they' will; at any rate; respect bis memory now, and utter no more of these libellous, baseless, and unfounded lasinuations,

THE VERDICT, 1/ After conferring together for 'a few minutes the jury returned a verdict of “Suicida whila · lo a state of temporary insanity.* The fore- man added that they wished to thank Colonel Wards, M. E., for his straightforward and explicit sintement, and especially for the cou tradictions which he gavato so many falsehoods which have been in circulation.

The Corner said he joined with the jury in expressing his deep condolence with Captain Luard and all the relatives of the deceased. As for Colonel Warde's explicit statement it had greatly assisted the inquiry, and they wore all greatly indebted to him.
