TOW OF 10,000 MILES.

* FLOATING: POCK T∙KEN FROM, THE TYNE TO CALEXO.

London, August 12 The longest tow on record, and unique la lis kind, inasmuch as the voyage in through the Straits of Magellan with a huge pantoon, was commenced on Thursday, when a floating 385ft, in length in width, left dock, 385 for atta, a distance of over 20,000

miles,

The pontoon, which has basu constructed by Measts, Swan; huster, and Richardson, the builders of the Matrelania, is in three sections, and is capable of lifting vessels of a capacity of 7,000 tons and is so designed that at any future time, by adding a fourth section, the lifting capacity may be increased to 9,500 loss, when the length will be over 500 it.

The towing operations have benn under. taken by Measri, Smit and Company, of↑ Rot- terdam, who are employing two of their most powerful tugs, the Roadies and the Zwarte Zee. of 1,000 and 1,500 b. p, respectively, and each carrying sixteen hands...

The pontoon itualf bas a crew of twelve, för whom special accommodation has been built into the sides of the floating dock, and they will not leave the vessel at any time during the voyage, which is expected in be completed in about 100 dayı.

The departure of the catious fotilla was watched from the banks of the hiver and the' harbour mouth by many thousands of specta tors, who heartily cheered the several crows at the beginning of their long and arduous voyage
