At the end of last year the proportion was only one quarter. The tunnel practically began on the 1st January, 1937, and the average progress per week was 5,8 feet whereas from January ist this year the average weekly progress has been 9.76. The proportion of lining to heading at the end of last year was a fourth, and its now a half. Much difficulty has been experi- enced in No. 8 tunnel near Taipo. There, continued land slides undid the work as fart a it was done. This has now been overcome and the work is going on well.

It was generally. imagined that Mr. Kleina' would have to;ba removed. but according to a letter from our [N, C. D. News) Pakhoi correspondent dated September 5, He has succeeded in maintaining his position while the boycott appears to have broken down, owing, it is said, to the boy cotiers' fear of bringing any specific charges against the Commissioner. Outside questions of actual moaclary loss, the worst sufferers are the local Chinese officials who went out of their way to give a gratuitous pledge that Mẹ, Kleins should be removed before August 16. The no-fulfilment of this pledge entails, on ibo-officials a severe loss of fate.
Our correspondent adds that a few days prior to the date of writing, a quarrel broke out between the Goverment soldiers' and the police in Holbon, in which four of the latter were killed.
