The Jackson-Harmsworth expedition went out to Franz Josel Land in 1894, and returned in 1897, Mr Jackson.bav.ng discovered a wide channel opening on a sea to the north, and many islands forming the wester portion of the Franz Josef group.
Nansen's expedition in 1895 was out of paculiar interest, his object being to drift across the ice to the North Pole, trusting to tidal cur- ronts. He got within 250 miles of the Polo, using ultimately dogs and sledges,
Captain Cagni in the Abruzzi expedition reached within 236 miles of the pola la 500,
Baron Toll's expedition, in 1972 ended with the death of the whole party.
The American Ziegler expedition in 1903 was also a failure, the ship America.being destroyed by the ice.
The latest allempt to reach the Pole was that of Mr. Wellman, whose airship' last- autumo was driven by a storm and wrecked upon a glacier. The gallant explorer fortunate- ly.escaped..
