The Government has had an offer of $3,703 per annum (incredulity ex- pressed) and wants to know if anything further. is offered. Still no bids. Auction closes.・・・ This of course is all extremely mercenary and distasteful about the only Moated Grange we have in the island (if a Chipere house in Mt Echo-rd is excepted, which is a toy). The history of Fort Tanjong Katong is interesting.
·Soop after the foundation of the City, there was bullt Fort Fullerton on the south side of the river, and its old foundations are even DUW VEX- ing the practical 'soul of the contractor of the new bridge. Battery-rd led to the Fort and rhu trees grew where the festive allug is Dow quaffed, and unfortunate seilor men are baled up on matters concerning their tickets, History does not relate where the old Post Office stood, but it was probably near the Central Police station; Anyhow the spit of land that ran to Fort Fullaiton was a pleasant shady path which lads and lasses ured. It was, in short, the only fort of the place at the time. Some time in the seventies, Singapore came into notoriety an a caling station of Imperial importance, and of course country lanes leading to. forts were impossible. The islands most be fortified. And Fort Palmer, Henry Edward McCallum set to work and devised so wondrous a series of island forts' that for many years the Imperial Government could co acé its way to find guas for them; and it was anly when the Editor of the Free Press paid out of bis owo pocket for a standing adver- tisement in the London papers "Who shall Singapore at Inst, get its long-promis ed gun," that Wo-lwich responded Then some wise, City Father in bis after tiffin cogi- tations, asked himself, "And 'where would the Town, be if a cruiser anchored in the Harbour and shelled my godown?" And be look 'it, so' much to heart that he got up an agitation for a Fort to protect the Town. Those wicked military authorities put a tongue in the

You shall have a fort at Tanjang Katong, and two lovely eight inch guns that China now cannot, afford to pay for, and we don't want to get to Chips So Font Tatjang Katong-was duly constructed-with the Colony's money: well constructed, as the Engineer Volunteers found, when ibay tried to blow op some of Tit. And all the while it was 'down in the scheme of defences that Tanjong Katong was to be immediately abandoned în caşa of attack | Still the Volunteer Artillary used to go over there and have a very good time.alitat Camps. They had a dasce-in be old Tanjong Katong Hotel and a very fina dance it was, with a specially constructed temporary pier, of a most delusive crookedness after I am. The S.V.A. bad firing practice there, and for many yours sigus of their prowess... were to be seen in a half-moon bliten out of the teak semaphore that had baan srected to make the thing look soldier-like. The hii was made in this way. The officer in charge of the 'gan reported that the target was partially obstructe. ad by the semaphore. There was a sporting "Governor and a sporting G.O C. at that time. "One said 'Nonsense.” The other''said ¦ Bet you five dollars it don't clear." "The word was given, the gun was fired, the slipt bit the semaphore, and five dollars passed.
Such are some of the memories of Fort Tan Jong Kalong sop to the fears of ignorant SHANGHAI
townspeople. But not bid for atʼAN suction'as a sea-side resort, till times are better and that. 166, Nanking Road. "Ford is made.
