EXPOSURE OF SPIRITUALISTIC FRAUDS
On the very vexed, but fascinating, anb. jactal "spooks Mr. -T--Werner baurin-bas
published a most interesting book by Hereward Carrington, entitled The Physical Phenomena of Spiritualiam Mr. Carrington, who is an American and a member of the Psychical Research Society, does not mince
matters. He is a most intelligent inquirer, and goes to work on that excellent system whereby "you should not believe (anything you hear, and only half of that you see. Ha tells us bluntly that most so-called "spiritua lism is sheer fraud-worked by the clavar trickery of the expert conjuren. There is, he says, scarcely a medium producing physical phenomena who has not, at one time or another, been exposed in the grossest kind of fraud.
“MORAL MUD.".
Indeed, the whole history of the subject—so 'far as the physical phenomena are concerned- bespattered with evidences of fraud and the worst moral mud" and intellectual mire -imaginable..............I he whole history of modern spiritualism presents three, and only three, cases of remarkable physical manifestations such as cannot very readily be accounted for by fraud by one or other of the devices and methods described in this suggestive and care-
dred pages Mr. Carrington describes at great langth and with extreme detail the various

On many occasions the Aforning Leader has emphasised the points Mr. Carrington takes pains to deal with the deception of the igno rant, who will believe anything ha'is told, and ́ a good deal more than be sees. It must be re- meinbered, says the writer, that the observer a a spiritualistic séance is not in a normal state- 'of mind, but if in a condition of more or less suppressed excitement induced by the 'condi- -tions of the séance.itself..
MYSTERIOUS Atmosphere,
́ ́It is only natural that it should be so, Thera is a certain mysterious atmosphere about a séance and particularly, a' dark, séance- calculated to, disturb the nerves of the most bardened. The darkness, the intense ex pectancy that something will happen, the quiet, the playing upon the émotions-it in all calculated to take the sitter out of the works

Dr. X. describes it thos; M. Maurice would hold the umbrella lightly.
The raps on the open umbrella are extreme- ly curious. We have heard raps on the wood- work and on the silk at one and the sama time; it is easy to perceive that the shock actually occurs in the wood, that the molecules of the latter are set in motion. The same thing, ve. curs with the silk; sad bere observation is even more interesting still; each rap' looks like a drop of some invisible liquid falling on the silk from a respectable height. The stretched silk of the umbrella is quickly and slightly (bas surely dented in, and sometimes the force with. which the raps are given is such as to sake. the umbrella i.: M. Meurice never touches iba silk.
