DONE BY TRYING. Nobody can tell what he can do till he tries. When a thing ought to be done the modern spirit moves us to keep working away at it until it is done. In the face of this idea the "impossible vanishes. Whers there's a will; that's a way. "If we could but rob cod liver oil of its sickening taste and smell and then combine it with two or three other ingredients we should possess the best remedy in the world for certain diseases that are now practically incurable." So said a famous English phys clan twenty-five years ago, "But it will never be done," he added. "You can no more turn cod liver oil into a pleasant palatable medicine, than you can turn the Codfish itself into a Bird of Paradise." Yet he lived to admit that in

On the 9th of December, 1731, the liath House of Cammoos rejected a Bill for estab- ching a pational back, but important failures in Irish banks in 1727, 1733 and 1758 gradually led to the establishment of the link of Ireland at St. Mary's Abbey, Dublin, on the first of June, 1783. The business was removed to the old Parliament House, College Green, in the month of May, 1208,
The Bank of Scolland was set up in Edio- burgh and commenced business, on the first of November, 1695. It was the second stitu- tion of the kind in the Empire.. Lending money to the crown, however, was prohibited by the charter.
Tas Rev. Joseph Emith of Wendover may be said to have been the first founder of savings banks in England, he baying in 1792 commenced a plan of receiving small sums. from his parishioners, and at Christmas and midiummer it was his practice to add as à stimulus to prudence and thrift an amount therein in propertion to the suns deposited with him. This was fultowed at Tottenbam in Middlesex in 1813 by a "charitable bank, which was started by a lady-Miss Priscilla Wakefield. The first Scotch savings bank was established in Edinburgh in ́1914.
The founder of the Post Office savings bank wa Sir Charles William Sikes, then plain Mr Sikes, miniger of the Huddersfield Banking Compsoy, Muddersfield.
