Cases of blackmailing letters to foreign firms on the Shanteen from robbers with demands for money have been frequently heard of recently, and it has now again come to notice that Meurs, Deacon & Co, a few days ago, re colved a similar þetter bearing dearly the same algnatures as tl'ysa on the letters received by other firms. The origibal loiter has been forwarded by the receiwari, through the acting Consul-General, to the Viceroy for his informa tion. Tha Viceroy has given justructions to his subordinates to exercise their best efforts for the apprehension of the writers of the blackmailing latter.

Admiral Li, thongh he himself will return to Canton, has left three of his gunboats with troops to be located in different positions for the protection of the merchants.
