It is somewhat curious that the Dutch, who are generally recognised to be an exceedingly long-headed and shrewd people, should, if only from the point of view of self-interest, neglect the opportunity of ensuring the prosperity of their Eastern colonies by attempting to coach Hate the Chinese seller in java. The Dutch, like the British, are a proud race, but in the eyes of other colonising nations they carry their pride of caste to abnormal lengths, when they refuse the ordinary privileges of citizenship to the very people who are best qualified to build up their overseas possessions. It is no new characteristic of the Dutch this attitude of aloof ness where native racer are concerned; rather it in an inherent fruit which apparently cannot be eradicated. The Boers, in South Africa carried their haughtiness towards the Kaffir to the point of exaggeration, except when it came to meting out punishment which they did with firm hand.
