Seven or eight years ago the price of one barrel was about Yoo, but

China, especially in Fukion, the quantity had been strictly limited until a few years ago. The industry, however, has recently made FXOAL, Central, containing & Rooms
The cost of Docking, and repair work, will be found to compare favourably with that much progress. The export of camphor from Chins in 1905 amounted to 1,400,000 kin and of any port in the world.
it increased to 2,500,000 kin in 1957. Hitherto the_production of camphur has practically bean confined to Fukien province, but as a result of investigations, it has been dis covered that materials are plentiful in the provinces of both Kwangtung and Kwangsi. [19 In the event of camphor being manufactured in these districts, there is little doubt but that Japan's camphor trade will be greatly affected. In view of the competition of artificial camphor and of Chinese camphor, Japan can no longer enjoy a monopoly' of the trade, and plans as to the future must be mapp ed out with the object of successfully meeting the competition. To begin with, the idea of the Government obtaining revenue from the tradeshould be abandoned and the battle should be conducted with foreiga' competitors as › ma ordinary article of commerce. If China could be induced to put into operation a similar Mo. nopoly, Law as is invogue in japán, much of the undesirable effects arising out of competition makaavaited. But not only in the concin- sian of such an agreement very difficult, but even if it could be made, the maintaining of a uniform scale of price in the foreigo markets between Japanese and Chinese camplior would be well-nigh impossible. Such being the case, the only course to be taken to the circum Hances is for the Government to abandon the intention of making much out of the camphor monopoly, and to give the trade a freer hand in the competition abroad —Jopan Chronicle,
